Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

 

We are part of a denomination called the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). We like to call ourselves Disciples. You can identify us by the red chalice with the St. Andrew’s Cross on our church sign. This mainline Protestant denomination centers faith not in a creed but in Christ, allowing plenty of room for differing personal beliefs. Membership is by faith in Christ and baptism.

Worship is familiar and comfortable to a wide range of persons of differing religious backgrounds. Faith in Christ is renewed each Sunday through sharing in Communion around the Lord’s table. We are often referred to as “people of the chalice” because of our high regard for sharing in the Lord’s Supper. Communion is truly the Disciples’ centerpiece, shared every time we gather to worship. Hence, Disciples are a table-focused, not pulpit-focused, people. That is why we are “home” to so many people representing a variety of backgrounds, opinions, and beliefs.

At one time, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) was the largest American-born religious movement in the country. Today, we have more than 3800 congregations in the United States and Canada, as well as missionary enterprises around the world. However, the “cradle of Disciples” is Kentucky, and 237 Disciples congregations are located in Kentucky. Also located in the state is one of our larger seminaries, Lexington Theological Seminary, as well as two institutions of higher learning, Transylvania University and Midway College.
